Engineering Solutions for a Better Tomorrow

Tubular Fuel Cell Technology: Lightweight hydrogen power for next-generation mobility and portable e

5MatterLab is developing a novel tubular proton exchange membrane fuel cell (t-PEMFC) — a compact, high-efficiency hydrogen power platform designed for applications where weight, runtime, and reliability matter most.

Unlike conventional planar fuel cells that rely on heavy stacks and complex assembly, our tubular architecture reimagines fuel cell design from the ground up. By replacing bulky components with a streamlined cylindrical structure, we significantly reduce weight, size, and manufacturing complexity while improving mass transport, durability, and energy efficiency.

The result is a new class of modular hydrogen power systems capable of delivering longer runtimes, rapid refueling, and zero-emission operation. Our initial focus is on high-value mobile and portable applications such as drones, robotics, and field-deployed power systems, where traditional batteries and fuel cells face performance limitations.

Built on years of advanced materials and electrochemical engineering research, and validated through industry engagement and prototype development, the 5MatterLab tubular fuel cell platform offers a scalable pathway toward lighter, more efficient clean-energy solutions for transportation, infrastructure, and distributed power.

Key advantages

  • Ultra-lightweight, modular architecture

  • Higher gravimetric power density than conventional designs

  • Reduced component count and simplified manufacturing

  • Rapid hydrogen refueling and extended runtime

  • Scalable from portable devices to larger energy systems

5MatterLab is actively seeking development partners, pilot customers, and strategic collaborators to bring this next-generation hydrogen power technology to market.
